What Is a Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger?

A heat exchanger transfers heat from one fluid to another without mixing them, and the shell-and-tube design is the most common type in process industries. It consists of a bundle of tubes inside a cylindrical shell: one fluid flows through the tubes while another flows around them in the shell, exchanging heat across the tube walls. These exchangers heat, cool, and recover energy throughout refineries, chemical plants, and industrial processes. Because they contain pressure and depend on tight, sound tube-to-tubesheet joints, they demand precise fabrication and quality welding.

Heat Exchanger Fabrication

Fabricating a shell-and-tube exchanger brings together several demanding operations — rolling and welding the shell, fabricating tubesheets and baffles, and joining the tube bundle to the tubesheets with sound, leak-tight connections. The tube-to-tubesheet joints are especially critical, as they separate the two fluids and must be tight and reliable. We bring our certified welding, rolling, and quality capabilities to this work as we launch heat exchanger fabrication, building exchangers to the specification and quality the equipment requires.

Heat Exchanger Repair

Heat exchangers wear in service — tubes foul, corrode, erode, and leak, and bundles need retubing or repair to restore performance. Repairing an exchanger, from plugging or replacing failed tubes to more extensive restoration, can return it to service at far less cost than replacement. We’ll bring our welding and quality capabilities to exchanger repair, restoring the tight, sound joints and integrity these units depend on. As with all pressure equipment, repair is done with the appropriate code discipline and verification.
