What Is a Pipe Rack?

A pipe rack is an elevated steel structure that supports and routes the piping running through an industrial facility, often carrying cable trays and small equipment as well. It’s the organized backbone of a plant’s piping system, holding runs off the ground, at the right elevations, and along defined routes between process units. Pipe racks must carry substantial loads — the weight of full pipe, contents, and attachments — and are built as structural frameworks of columns, beams, and bracing sized for those loads and for the piping they’ll support.
